My menstrual cup.

Oh boy, do I love it.

It was sometime around 2018 when I finally ordered a Diva cup. That was a huge plunge for me as I’m a girl who always hated having a tampon inside her. So I was resigned to being stuck with bulky, oversized pads the size of a diaper.

My friend at the time couldn’t stop raving about her menstrual cup. And the “crunchy” Facebook group I was a part of had nothing but wonderful things to say about these life-changing cups.

So many terrific benefits. Psst, no more painful cramps? Was this too good to be true?

Spoiler: it wasn’t.

I fell deeply in love with my Diva the first time I used her. Yes, there is a huge learning curve, but I’m here to tell you to embrace that. By your third cycle, you should be quite familiar with your cup and love using it, as I do.

Now, I’m advanced in using my menstrual cup and I’ve experimented with other brands so I feel able to offer some informed advice to other women. They’re an environmentally-friendly choice as well as being more comfortable. And the money I have saved in tampons and pads has made my wallet smile.

What exactly is a menstrual cup?

A menstrual cup is just that — a flexible cup that you wear inside your vagina. Instead of absorbing your period blood, like a tampon, a cup collects it. You can wear a menstrual cup for up to 12 hours and they come in all different shapes and sizes.

How do you use a menstrual cup?

Each cup comes with its own valuable instructions — don’t skip these! You will need to get personal with your vagina for insertion and removal and become familiar with how to properly clean the cup.

Since I’ve found my Diva cup and love it so much, I’ve been shouting it from the rooftops to all my friends and fellow period-haters. Would you believe that I used to hate my period? The comment about fewer cramps — not a joke. That is why I’m inspired to share some well-known and loved menstrual cups.

5 Menstrual Cups to Try If You’re Ready to Ditch the Tampons

1. Saalt

Saalt menstrual cup is loved for being soft — which is why it’s my favorite to use at the moment.

Online reviews rave at how Saalt cup is comfortable to insert which makes it great for newbies.

2. Flex

With ultimate comfort and easy removal, the Flex menstrual cup comes with two FLEX Rings, which you can use in place of the cup that has a plastic-like polymer that acts as a seal.

3. Diva Cup

The Diva cup comes in 3 sizes — truly a fit for all ages, sizes, and flows.

The Diva is made of silicone and guarantees 12-hour protection. It’s always newbie-friendly.

4. Softdisc

Softdisc cup is changing the game with their disposable cups.

If the thought of cleaning out your cup seems too much in the beginning, Softdisc offers 14 disposable discs which are reported to hold five tampons’ worth of fluid.

5. Blossom

The Blossom cup is one of the cheaper options out there for menstrual cups. Try it if you’re not sure about the whole menstrual cup thing.

Other than its softness, the Blossom cup is backed with a money-back guarantee, so if you don’t like it, you can return it.

Menstrual cups are changing the game for women and their periods. Don’t take my word for it though. It’s something you’ll have to experience for yourself to truly enjoy the benefits of more freedom during your period.
